How to Choose a Sunglasses Manufacturer in China: A Guide for Eyewear Brands

Choosing a sunglasses manufacturer in China should not come down to the lowest quotation or MOQ. For a brand developing custom eyewear, the stronger supplier is usually the one that can review the design before sampling, explain manufacturing risks, solve problems during development, control production consistency and communicate clearly when something changes.

Before placing an order, evaluate six areas: product fit, engineering capability, sampling, production stability, commercial terms, and communication/IP protection.

1. Define the Project Before Comparing Suppliers

A useful supplier evaluation starts with a clear project brief.

Your project may begin with a sketch, CAD drawing, reference sample, product photo or an existing frame that needs modification. Send as much confirmed information as possible: dimensions, materials, colors, lens requirements, hinge preferences, logo artwork, estimated quantity and packaging.

2. How to Verify a Sunglasses Manufacturer’s Production Fit

A factory tour or workshop video can confirm that manufacturing takes place, but buyers should also ask whether the supplier’s actual processes match the product being developed.

For acetate eyewear, SEESUN handles core processes including material preparation and conditioning, CNC machining, tumbling, engraving, hinge insertion, polishing, laser marking and pad printing, assembly and packaging in-house. Some specialist operations are completed by external partners.

For metal eyewear, in-house processes include small-component tooling, hydraulic pressing, welding and tumbling, while some complex tooling, wire cutting, rim forming, polishing and plating are handled through specialist suppliers.

The goal is not to find a factory that claims to do everything internally. It is to understand who controls each critical process and how specialist work is managed.

3. Engineering Capability Matters Before Sampling

Good engineering review can prevent expensive revisions later.

If a buyer provides a TR90 reference frame but wants it reproduced in acetate, the same dimensions cannot simply be copied. The engineering team needs to review frame thickness, front and temple shape, hinge connection and decorative metal parts to determine what can realistically be reproduced in the new material.

Mixed metal-and-acetate designs create different questions, particularly around connection strength. Complex acetate shapes may require new tooling or five-axis machining. Multi-color acetate can require decisions between cold lamination, heat lamination or high-frequency joining to reduce shrinkage marks or breakage during processing.

Buyer takeaway: Do not only ask, “Can you make it?” Ask, “What would you change to make it stable in production, and why?”

4. Use Sampling to Test Problem-Solving Ability

A sample is not only a visual approval. It is also a test of how the supplier investigates problems.

Hinge Opening & Loosening Issue

The problem: A U.S. customer project used an imported OBE spring hinge with its matching original screw. After use, the temples became less smooth to open and the hinge gradually loosened.

What we found: Further discussion with the hinge supplier traced the issue to the structure of that particular hinge.

What we changed: We introduced a dedicated lubricant inside the hinge mechanism.

Result: The opening and loosening issue did not recur during normal warranty use.

Manufacturing Insight

A branded component does not automatically remove engineering risk. During sampling, evaluate whether the manufacturer investigates the root cause, explains why the problem occurred, proposes practical options and verifies the solution.

5. Production Stability Matters More Than a Perfect Sample

A well-finished sample is valuable only if the factory can reproduce it consistently.

Thick Acetate Frame Deformation in Hot Weather

The problem: A European customer’s thick, heavy acetate frames experienced deformation in earlier shipments, particularly during hot summer conditions.

Our actions: We extended material conditioning at several production stages, added further stabilization after CNC machining, tightened weight consistency and changed the packaging method so frames were better separated during long-distance transport.

Result: The frames arrived without obvious deformation and remained within the required tolerance range.

Process Control, Not Only Final Inspection

SEESUN’s main QC stages include Incoming Material IQC → Lens IQC → In-Process QC → Finished Product QC. Preventing a problem during production is usually more effective than discovering it during final inspection.

6. Compare MOQ and Lead Time in Context

MOQ, sampling time and production lead time should be discussed together with the actual product requirements. Material, custom colors, hinges, metal components, tooling, lens specifications, finishing and packaging can all affect the practical MOQ.

7. Communication and IP Protection Complete the Evaluation

Manufacturing problems can happen even with experienced suppliers. What matters is how they are handled.

Good project communication should follow a simple logic: Problem → Cause → Options → Impact → Recommended Solution.

Before starting, clarify who manages the project, who approves technical changes, how revisions are recorded and how production issues will be reported.
